Spatiotemporal cortical control by claustrum

The claustrum is a small and mysterious brain area in need of study. We recently proposed a role for the claustrum in cognitive function in a model, called Network Instantiation in Cognitive Control (NICC), that provided the framework for several testable hypotheses.

In the current study, we will use 7T functional MRI to evaluate claustrum's function in various cognitive tasks using a “deep phenotyping” approach, whereby a small number of participants are tested for long durations and in various conditions. This approach will provide strong evidence for the role of the claustrum in specific cognitive activities, and its relationship to other cognitive networks.
